“Tough” Official Performance & Meaning | Vevo

Everyone who keeps an ear out for new pop voices were stopped dead in their tracks by the powerhouse vocal that drove the lyrics of last year’s “Bruises.” It was brusque but vulnerable, sleek but gritty. Lewis Capaldi was responsible for it, and all those who heard the overwhelming emotion at its center wanted more. The Scottish newcomer, who was one of Vevo’s Artists To Watch 2018, has had plenty of fans turning his way since then, and each new song he writes and records carries a similar clout emotionally. As a kid, Capaldi was a fan of Paolo Nuntini, and when he first began to sing, he tried to parallel the heft of Joe Cocker’s mighty rasp. The results have blossomed into something quite personal, and when he came into Vevo HQ to perform “Tough” he was in great shape. Capaldi says the song is about the vibe you have after breaking up with someone and you’re “trying to find your feet again.”
