Vevo Meets: Skip Marley. 2017

Music runs deep in Skip Marley’s blood – his grandfather is reggae icon Bob Marley (Skip’s mother is Cedella Marley, the daughter of Bob and Rita Marley). “Even though I never met [Bob],” he told Teen Vogue, “I always knew who he was – he was everywhere in the house. When I was 11 or 12, I started to realize what a positive effect he had on the world and thought, ‘Hey, I want to do that, too.’ ”

When Skip was “around 13 or 14, my uncle Stephen was on tour, and he told me that I was going to sing [with him] that night,” he told Billboard magazine. “I had never sung in front of anybody, but it came out naturally. Ever since, it just stuck.” Skip’s first tracks, “Cry To Me” and “Life,” were issued by Tuff Gong, the Marley family’s record label, in 2015; earlier this year he was signed by Island Records, the imprint that spread Marley and the Wailers’ groundbreaking reggae riddims worldwide. But Skip’s profile soared with the release of Katy Perry’s “Chained To the Rhythm,” on which he has a feature. Perry was inspired to include him after hearing his “Lions.” The pair did a rousing performance of the song at the 2017 Grammy Awards show, and Skip makes a cameo in her hit video. His debut album will be out soon.

His Vevo Meets interview found him talking about being influenced by more than just reggae, his love of horror films, and how he would like to enlighten people with his music.
