Underoath – Three Thoughts on Christianity
For more than 15 years Underoath has been sharpening its fierce eloquence when it comes to pounding out the Christian-slanted hard rock that has earned the band a glowing global rep. Blending post-hardcore and heavy metal with a decent dose of screamo, the Tampa outfit featuring Aaron Gillespie and Spencer Chamberlain has moved from blustery broadsides like “I’ve Got Ten Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain’t Gonna Do Jack” to refined explosions such as those that dot their first disc in eight years, ‘Erase Me.’ The album hits hard. From “Bloodlust” to “I Gave Up” the band rails through a storm of sound. But that sound is no-longer associated with overt Christian perspectives. Chamberlain has told the press that they “couldn’t grow musically” under that banner, and once they let it go they “became healthy, happy….and were able to create again.” Our ‘Three Thoughts’ interview finds them amplifying that notion, with the guys questioning recent actions in the name of Christianity. “When you believe in the rules and not the reason [behind them], then you got an issue,” says Gillespie. Watch them shoot from the hip about the act of speaking truth to power.

Do they still believe in Jesus?
all these thoughts on Christianity but they're not talking about Jesus 🙁 of course there's tons wrong with modern christian subculture. of course there's problems with Christian people ("normal human beings"); Aaron's last line was great though
sadly so much of christianity is full of the unloving and unaccepting but thats not jesus my guys. jesus is all loving and all accepting and man goes against what jesus stood for. jesus wasnt interested in anything but the black sheep. fact is were all black sheep and no one should pretend to live perfect lives, especially inside of church.
i hope you guys have found peace regardless 🙂 x
bruh. the bible literally says we're all fucked up and imperfect, which entails what? uh that yeah, in this shitty fallen world christians and christian communities are going to be fucked up too. not only does what people believe or do not invalidate the truth of the existence of anything, the fact that christians are fucked up doesnt either imply or entail that christianity is false or that God does not exist. and in this hilarious ironic situation, the fact that they had these horrible experiences with christians literally affirms what is taught in the bible. it affirms the truth of Christianity. easy trend to spot in the bible, for those who are interested, is that the entire story of the bible is the sheep of God(his community of believers) continuously falling away from him, only for one profit, yes, just one, to come along pull them together again, which, every single time, only holds for a moment in time. Jesus came with the final solution, and this was his message: you are fucked in this world, but, you can be saved, which, only takes place in the afterlife and here are some things you can do and hold onto until that day comes.
yes, christian communities are all fucked up, just like the rest of them. its not a question of which denomination is right, they are all wrong, bcs they are all ran by fucked up people like you and me. the question is, what is the one truth they all share? That there is a God, and if you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you will be saved(T's and C's apply, obviously). that's it.
so, if you are a doubting christian, doubt. learn, find the truth. if your community is fucked up, take a stand, even if you have to alone. that is our lot in life, hold on, be strong.
Beautiful part of having choice, it is their choice. I still have love and support from them and am part of heaps of communities God’s as well.
Aaron’s the top and Spencer’s the bottom.
I’m sad they haven’t found Jesus. I understand they found the western religion Christianity.
Knowing Jesus is having a relationship with Jesus. These men got to know other people in a religion but never actually were shown what it means to follow Jesus. It’s all laid out in His word and it is through His strength, wisdom and power that we’re transformed and we live for Him, not ourselves. A freedom to love Him and follow Him at the same time to turn away from sin. Those addictions, the mental issues with anxiety, depression and panic attacks all go away. The love deepens for you to Him. It sounds counterintuitive to these young men but i will pray that they find Jesus Christ and be transformed like i was.
Christianity became conservative because of white supremacy.
They both talk a lot but don’t say shit
What are these 2 moronic Protestants going on about?
These guys used the Christian fans and industry to have a career. They are the real hypocrites and their issues with modern Christianity has nothing to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ. They clearly were never born again.
Pathetic and weak.
I can relate to this band & their experience with Christianity so much. "When you believe in the rules but not the reason…" So true!!
Sounds like they surrounded themselves with the wrong Christians. Sad really. Theyre explaining Christian Pharisees.
They are describing the church, not Christ. He should have stopped goin to Church but kept the faith in Christ. Just my opinion.
In a nutshell, they put their faith in people and those people failed them. Therein lies the problem, God never fails, people always will.
You cant look for perfection in men or women theyll fail you always but i think its good to question things regardless of what youve been told or hear telling you not to is just ludicrous
I think there’s a lot of really good points but I do think it’s sad when people face fake Christians and they equate it to everything being a lie. You can be imperfect and struggle with bullshit and have questions and still be a child of God. I just think it’s sad. When people face toxic relationships most get out and find new healthy relationships. I wish we saw more of that with the church.
I feel like somebody hurt them. They went to the wrong church and talked to the wrong people and blamed it on “Christianity”
It’s not about Christianity it’s about loving like Christ loved the church and if they talked to the right people the three points they just made would not exist.
Jesus has always existed, no beginning and no end. He is no human race. He CHOSE to come to the earth in an Arab/ Hebrew body. However, it was not the body he came in that made him God. It was who was in that body that made him God! Jesus could have came in ANY body from any race he chose and he’d still be GOD. The body, the race, is not significant! He was not just a man! He was totally God in a human body!
I love reading Isaiah 55 and Psalm 103 !💙
The way of Jesus is not necessarily the way of organized Christianity. In this way, I get them. But then why just throw away the child with the bathwater?
Not all Christian’s suffer
So sad
Let this be a lesson: NEVER let “Church hurt” affect your walk with God. I’m praying that Jesus reaches Underoath’s hardened hearts again.
If God was real there would be no need for Faith or for multiple world religions. Everyone would believe the same thing. People hold on to their religious beliefs today because of comfort. Not because they actually believe it. That's at least true for me and why I continued to believe for so long.
It just seems to me that religion is incredibly man centered. Almost every single religion known to man was started by a man that was "visited by god" or visited by some "celestial being." Abraham was visited by god, which started Judaism. The Apostle Paul supposedly met Jesus, on the road to damascus. (which was the start of modern day Christianity. The christian church today follows Paul. Not Jesus!) Muhammad was visited by the angel gabriel, which started Islam. Joseph smith supposedly saw god in a forest in upstate new york, which started mormonism in 1820. See what i'm saying. All of these religious faiths were started by men. Not God. Religion was created to control weakminded people and to steal whatever money you may have set aside for yourself. It's a complete con game! Humans have created a lot of useful things over the centuries. Religion isn't one of them.
who are these chicks?
"Good God, if Your song leaves our lips
If Your work leaves our hands
Then we will be wanderers and vagabonds
They will stare and say how empty we are
How the freedom we had turned us up as dead men"
Queers? They seem very degenerate. They service The Jew.
. I have found Jesus in the Word of God. He is so very real to me. I will never forsake Him. One of my son’s is now Christian missionary. He is surrounded by people who just love others and lay their lives down to help people with the struggles of this life. I told him stay with what you are doing and don’t go into pastoring in a church. That can get ugly. I recognize my advice is not perfect, but a reaction to the ugly things that Underoath has seen. Out of love for Jesus and others we can’t let evil win. stand against the wolves. Jesus said the two greatest commandments:
““Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus said to him, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.””
Matthew 22:36-40 NET
What a bummer. Im so sorry for their experiences. I dont believe that represents every christian. 😞
you can have doubts, God is sufficient for the doubts, or your questions. I am sorry if people you had in your life made you feel like you shouldn't question God. It is through our doubts and questions that our faith in the Lord becomes strong. I hope that you come back to God.
these guys are such goofs .. they decided to give up on faith because of other people hahahahaha .. how weak can you actually be .. faith is faith and it's that simple .. the community has nothing to do with it hahahaha … weak little vaginas
Point 1. That's what "christians" do yes, but not the ones who really love God. Our church couldn't care less on how a pastor looks. It's about how he preaches.
They have a very skewed view of Christianity.
People everywhere need to do more research about different sects and denominations of Christianity. In the Episcopal church, asking questions, coming to your own conclusions and exploring the faith are apart of how things are done. All these people getting harmed by evangelical, right wing Protestant churches are making a bad name for Christianity, these guys included / they are saying that “modern Christianity” became conservative, there are thousands of denominations and billions of Christian’s, this is simply just not the truth – Christianity and the faith is much more complicated than that, and a TRUE Christian with TRUE faith would know this. Shame on these guys.
THIS!!!! Bruhhh hell yeah.
Still diva's
i grew up catholic, went to catholic high school, rosary every morning before class, my best friend influenced me into emo stuff and came out of hs with underoath as my favorite band, never really liked them for the lyrics and theme but the sound and aaron's vocals were it for me, pretty skeptic guy so i got over all religion bs soon in college, bs is just the perfect word for it imo, going to see them in my country in 2mths!!!!
2026
Protestantism has made so many Christians into atheists it’s sad, specifically American evangelical church. It did it to me. Finding ancient Christianity healed me in a way a mega church could never dream.
Damn, they’ve totally misunderstood Christianity 😢
